Aït Ben Haddou

The ksar of Aït Ben Haddou above its palm grove and the dry river bed

Aït Ben Haddou is the fortified village on the old caravan road between the Sahara and Marrakech, a UNESCO site since 1987 and the kasbah you have seen in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and a dozen other films.

Looking down from the alleys of Aït Ben Haddou over the valley, souvenirs hung on the earthen walls

It sits thirty kilometres before Ouarzazate, so every desert tour from Marrakech stops here on the first morning: cross the river on foot, climb through the ksar to the granary at the top, and look back over the valley.

A day trip from Marrakech pairs it with the Tizi n’Tichka pass and the film studios of Ouarzazate.
