Zagora

The moon over the jebel at Zagora at sunset, a camel and a walker on the plain

Zagora sits at the end of the Draa valley, a hundred kilometres of palm groves and kasbahs south of Ouarzazate. Its dunes are smaller than Merzouga’s but a full day closer to Marrakech, which is why the two-day desert tour goes here.

Camels resting on the stony plain outside Zagora, two travellers looking out

The road from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas, passes Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa through Agdz. The dunes of Tinfou and the bivouacs around Zagora are reached on the first evening.

Zagora is the right choice with children, on a tight schedule, or as a first taste of the desert. The camps are simpler and the drive shorter; the stars are the same.
