Erg Chigaga

A camel caravan winding through the dunes, a guide in blue leading

Erg Chigaga is the wild one: forty kilometres of dunes beyond M’Hamid, at the end of the tarmac, reached by 4×4 across a stony plain. No village, no lights, no other camps in sight.

A date palm standing in the dunes, camp tents behind

The route runs Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Zagora, M’Hamid, then an hour of track to the camp. It takes three days minimum and suits people who have already seen Merzouga or who want the desert to themselves.

The return can cross Lake Iriqui, a dry lake bed, to Foum Zguid and the Anti-Atlas, which makes a loop instead of a retrace.
