Todra Gorge

The red walls of the Todra Gorge at first light

The Todra Gorge is a canyon of red rock three hundred metres high and, at its narrowest, ten metres wide, with a river running through it and a palm grove at its mouth near Tinghir.

Most tours between the Dades valley and Merzouga walk the gorge in the morning, when the sun reaches the floor. Climbers come for the walls; everyone else comes for the half-hour walk and the tea afterwards.

The road continues through the Dades and Todra valleys to the desert, which is why the gorge sits on the third day of the four-day loop and the second of the three-day tour.
